Pegasus with Black Sea Eyes

Image

Man & Pegasus, Bronze 1949 – Artist: Carl Miles, Swedish  (1875-1955)

I look into your eyes and see

Pools of deep Black Sea;

An ancient mariner’s rime

Of odyssey in time;

Fathoms of a cryptic hue

Descending into the soul of you.

The time is now but the place

Was on Mount Helicon, Greece

Where Pegasus with a gentle blow

Of his hoof caused Hippocrene to flow;

A fountain sacred to the Muses,

The source of all poetic truths.

You call me Muse, I blink

Because I am amused to think

That I could be your fountain

Of inspiration.  But from the mountain

Of Helicon it took a Pegasus to create

Before a Muse could motivate.

Your eyes are what I see,

Pools of deep Black Sea;

An ancient mariner’s rime

Of odyssey in time;

Fathoms of enigmatic clues

Discovering the poet in you.
